* Mycobacterium avium complex or M. kansasii, disseminated or extrapulmonary;
* Mycobacterium tuberculosis, any site (pulmonary or extrapulmonary
* Penicilliosis marneffei infection, disseminated
* Pneumocystis jiroveci (carinii) pneumonia;
* Pneumonia, recurrent;
* Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy;
* Salmonella septicemia, recurrent;
* Toxoplasmosis of brain;
* Wasting syndrome due to HIV
The subdivisions of the above categories are made according to the CD4 counts as follows:
Categories A1, B1, C1: CD4 ≥500 cells/µL
Categories A2, B2, C2: CD4 200 to 499 cells/µL
Categories A3, B3, C3: CD4 <200 cells/µL, or <14% CD4 cells
DIAGNOSIS OF AIDS: All persons within Category C as well as all persons in subset 3 with a
CD4 lymphocyte count <200/µL (or <14% CD4 cells) meet surveillance criteria for a definition
of AIDS.
