Institutional involvement in the education system with regard to statistics

35. Pre-primary and Primary education statistics: The Directorate of Primary
Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education is responsible for
collecting, processing and producing education statistics at this level. Every year, the
MIS unit of DPE collects data from the decentralised MIS database existing at the
district level to produce the EFA and other education indicators for the primary level.

36. Simultaneously, the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of DPE collects the
summary data for each sub-district on a quarterly basis. Some basic indicators,
including number of institutions, number of teachers by sex, enrolment by grade and
sex and age-group at primary education level, are collected.

37. Secondary and Tertiary Education Statistics: The Bangladesh Bureau of
Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) is responsible for collecting,
processing and producing education statistics at the post-primary level. This
organization has developed and is maintaining a centralised database management
system as well as GIS school mapping system for the post-primary level institutions in
the country. The database covers 97% of post-primary institutions. However, there is a
lack of maintenance for data on technical, vocational, professional and university
education which cover the remaining 3% of institutions in the post-primary level. The
University Grant Commission (UGC) also collects and disseminates information and
statistics and publishes the annual report for the public and private universities.
