Introduction to Fisheries and Aquaculture Technologies
10. Integrated Chicken-Fish Farming
01. Contact division/person/unit Freshwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research
Institute, Mymensingh.
02. Location of application Perennial ponds, all over the country.
03. Key characteristics of the a. Direct discharge of fresh chicken manure into the fish
technology ponds produces enough natural fish food. Additional
fertilizer is not needed.
b. Supplementary feed is not necessary for high fish
production.
c. Constructing chicken sheds over the ponds maximize
space utilization.
d. Increased animal protein production from minimum
land and inputs.
04. Production guidelines
Pond preparation a. Pond selection - perennial ponds. with an average
water depth of 1.5 to 3.0 m.
b. Predator control - eithe-r by draining or application of
pesticide like rotenone @ 60-80 g/dec (water depth
0.6-0.9 m.
c. Cowdung @ 200 - 250 kg/ha.
Stocking a. Density @ 6000 fingerlings (8-lOg size )/ha.
b. Stocking ratio @ silver carp 30%, catla 10%, rohu
25% mrigal 20%, grass carp 10% and common carp
5%. In addition, 2000 rajpunti fingerlings/ha can be
stocked.
Construction of chicken shed a. With locally available materials like bamboo, wood,
terrestrial grass and hay.
b. The recommended floor space for layer and broiler
1.1-1.4 sq. meter respectively.
c. The space between bamboo split enough to let the
chicken manure drop into the ponds, but not as wide
that may cause injury to birds legs.
d. The height of the house should be 1.2-1.5 m from the
floor.
Poultry rearing Type of poultry - Starcross or Isa Brown or Hiser
commercial layer.,
Density @ 500 birds/ha of pond.
