Introduction to Fisheries and Aquaculture Technologies
11. Fish Culture in Rice Fields
01. Contact division/person/unit Freshwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research
Institute, Mymensingh.
02. Location of application Rice field (Where T. Aman and Boro are cultivated).
03. Key characteristics of the a. Production of rice and fish simultaneously from paddy
technology fields.
b. Less weed growth in rice-fish culture system.
c. No additional capital is required for fish culture in rice
fields.
d. Increase in yield of rice.
e. Control of insects by fish.
04 Production guidelines
Land selection a. Land should not be flood prone.
b. Height of the dyke should be 25 to 40 em.
c. Soil texture should be clayey-loamy.
d. Water depth in rice field should be at least 18 to 25
,cm during culture period.
Land preparation A small ditch (2 m deep) needs to be constructed at
the lower part of the land. The ditch size should be 3
to 4% of the rice plot.
Stocking of fish fingerlings After 15 days of transplantation of seedling, when
water height in the plot is 18 em, rajpunti or nilotica
or mirror carp fingerlings are to be stocked @ 12/dec.
Management Normally feeding is not done but sometime for higher
fish production, rice bran can be supplied @ 2 to 3%
of estimated fish biomass. Use of insecticide is
prohibited.
Fish yield 1.2 to 1.4 kg/decimal (300 to 350 kglha).
05. Risk involvement and a. Protection of against flood and drying.
management in adopting the b. Protection against theft of fish.
technology
06. Impact of environment No adverse effect of rice-fish farming on the
aquatic/terrestrial environment has been recorded so
far. Moreover, fish farming in rice field will reduce
and control the aquatic weeds and insects conducive
for rice production.
07. Procedure of transfer The technology can be transferred through relevant
public extension agencies and NGOs. Training and
demonstrations are important for the purpose.
08. Expected outcome Fish production and farmer's income will be
increased.
Expected income Tk. 14,000/halseason.
09. Recommendations a. Training should be conducted on the rice-fish farming
system for the farmers and extension workers.
b. Demonstration plots should be set up in different
areas of Bangladesh.
c. BFRI, DoF and DAE should maintaining a strong
liaison to disseminate this technology.
