            6. Culture of Pangas in Ponds

            01.   Contact division/person/unit       Riverine Station, BFRI, Chandpur.
            02.   Location of application            Perennial ponds and water bodies all over the country.
            03.   Key characteristics of the     a.  Pangas can adapt and survive under minimum oxygen
                  technology                         and turbid water condition.
                                                 b.  The fish has no predacious nature so it can be used for
                                                     polyculture.
                                                 c.  Due to its omnivorous  nature it can be cultured  by
                                                     feeding artificial feeds.
                                                 d.  The fish is tasty, therefore, it has high demand among
                                                     the consumers and can be sold with high price in the
                                                     market.
            04.   Production guidelines
                  Selection of water bodies          Water bodies to be selected that retain water round the
                                                     year with a depth of2-2.5 meter.
                  Pond prepartion                a.  Undesirable fishes can be removed by repeated netting
                                                     or using rotenone @ 60 gm/decimal.
                                                 b.  Ponds  can  be prepared  by applying  lime  @ 1
                                                     kg/decimal;  cattle dung @ 4 kg/decimal;  urea 250
                                                     gm/decimal and TSP 150 gm/decimal.
