       17. Hilsa Fishery Resources Development     and Management

             Spawning and nursery grounds         Spawns in September-October  at lower Meghna near

                                              a.  Riverine  one around  Chandpur  & Juvenile  are
                                                  captured in November-May.
                                              b.  Coastal  one  from  Kuakata  to Dublar  Char  &
                                                  juveniles are captured in December-January.
             Gear used to catch juvenile hilsa  a.  Chandpur  area of Meghna  : Jagat ber, current jal
                                                  (gillnet), Mashary jal etc.
                                              b.  Coastal area: Savar jal; behundi jal, poa jal etc.
        04.  Production guidelines                If jatka catch is protected an additional  production
             Procedure                             1.5-2.0 lakh tons can be increased.

        06.  Impact of environment                Conservation and development of hilsa fisheries.
        07.  Procedure of transfer            a.  Hilsa  Fisheries  Management  and  Development
                                                  Action Plan may be prepared and implemented  by
                                                  Department  of Fisheries  in collaboration  of BFRI
                                                  and hilsa catchers and traders.
                                              b.  Public  awareness  should  be created  about  the
                                                  detrimental  effect  of jatka  catching  through
                                                  advertising in different mass media.
                                              c.  Sufficient training program can be arranged.
        08.  Expected output                  a.  Increase hilsa production.
                                              b.  Protection  of jatka will reset brood hilsa and more
                                                  recruitment of hilsa.
        09.  Recommendations                  a.  Based on the research findings banning of all type of
                                                  nets for juvenile  catch at upper Meghna  is being
                                                  implemented.
                                              b.  Major  spawning  grounds  should  be protected  at
                                                  lower Meghna by totally banning hilsa fishing during
                                                  September to October at least 3 days before & after
                                                  the full moon.      '
