family or friends. In either case, HIV screening must be completed within 12 to 24 hours to
allow for viability of the transplant tissues. Recipient testing for HIV is recommended just prior
to transplantation and 3, 6, and 12 months thereafter in order to identify and offer therapies to
persons who may become infected.[1134,1135]
There is no current method for inactivating HIV in whole organs. Use of gamma
irradiation will not eliminate HIV from in vitro samples.[1136] Human breast milk can be
pasteurized to inactivate HIV.[1081,1134,1135]
