Introduction to Fisheries and Aquaculture Technologies
                                            d. Crop rotation of shrimp with salt or rice is also
                                               practiable.
                                            e. Recycling of organic accumulates during shrimp high
density shrimp farming would be done by fish culture
                                               or rice farming.
                                            f. Species specific pest, pathogen or virus are eliminated
                                               due to crop rotation.
       04. Production guideline
Culture system a. Dry season, when salinity remains high at coastal
farms, tiger shrimp should be cultured following
                                               proven farming method.
                                            b. After harvest of shrimps neither affluent or bottom
accumulates should be discarded or removed.
                                            c. Attempts should be taken to convert organic
                                               accumulates into planktonic foods.
                                            d. If high density culture of shrimp is done during dry
season, then water in pond should be aerated by paddle
                                               wheels for 2-3 weeks.
                                            e. This process will mineralize a part of accumulates into
minerals, hence will provide energy for planktonic
                                               growth.
                                            f. Accumulates during low density culture will not be a
                                               problem.
                                            g. Once a part of accumulates are converted into
planktonic foods, then plankton feeder fishes such as
mullets, GIFT, etc. may be stocked.
                                            h. If salinity levels goes down around 10-12 ppt after
harvest of shrimps than sarputi (Silver barb), mirror
                                               carp etc. may be raised.
                                            1. If non-planktonic feeders are cultured such as pangus
or sea bass, then these may be cultured in salinities up
to 18-20 ppt for pangus and more higher for sea bass.
                                           J. Supplementary feeding is discouraged if planktonic
feeders are cultured. These should be cultured with
relatively low density so that they can depend on
                                               natural foods grown in pond.
                                            k. For species like pangus, supplementary feeding should
be done rationally so that it does not grave the pond
                                               bottom with deposition.
                                            I. Sea bass can be cultured with tilapia without
                                               supplemental feeding.
                                            m. If shrimp cultivation is replaced by rice or salt
seasonally then these will follow conventional method
                                               of production.
                                            n. If high density shrimp cultivation is followed by
culture of finfishes with supplementary feeding, then
accumulated organic debris must be removed during
dry season, before planting of shrimp again.
