                                         the hopelessness of the old deductive meth-
                                         ods of reasoning, and decided that no the-
                                         ories ought to be indulged in until prepara-
                                         tions had been made by the accumulation
                                         of accurate observations. We may claim for
                                         him the title of founder of the inductive
                                         method.
