(Examples 3 a nd 4 i nclude the structural descriptors triangulo and quadro which are
introduced below i n S ection IR-9.2.5.7.) Note that the name in Example 3 d oes not specify
which chloride ligands bind to which central atoms.
IR-9.2.5.4 Symmetrical dinuclear entities
For symmetrical d inuclear entities, the name m ay be simplified by employing multiplicative
prefixes.
Examples:
1. [Re 2 Br 8 ] 2
bis(tetrabromidorhenate)(Re—Re)(2 )
2. [Mn 2 (CO) 10 ]
bis(pentacarbonylmanganese)(Mn—Mn)
3. [{Cr(NH 3 ) 5 } 2 (m-OH)] 5þ
m-hydroxido-bis(pentaamminechromium)(5þ)
4. [{PtCl(PPh 3 )} 2 (m-Cl) 2 ]
di-m-chlorido-bis[chlorido(triphenylphosphane)platinum]
5. [{Fe(NO) 2 } 2 (m-PPh 2 ) 2 ]
bis(m-diphenylphosphanido)bis(dinitrosyliron)
6. [{Cu(py)} 2 (m-O 2 CMe) 4 ]

tetrakis(m-acetato-kO:kO )bis[(pyridine)copper(II)]
In some cases multiplicative prefixes m ay also be used to simplify names of unsymmetrical
complexes (see Example 5 i n S ection IR-9.2.5.5).
IR-9.2.5.5 Unsymmetrical dinuclear entities
The name of an unsymmetrical d inuclear species will result from following t he general rules
described in Sections IR-9.2.5.1 to IR-9.2.5.3.
Example:
1. [ClHgIr(CO)Cl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ]
2
carbonyl-1kC-trichlorido-1k Cl,2kCl-bis(triphenylphosphane-
1kP)iridiummercury(Ir—Hg)
In this example, iridium is reached last on following the arrow shown in Table VI. It is
therefore listed before mercury in the name and is given t he central atom locant 1.
