                                            The Phoenicians are supposed to have
                                         used the stars for navigation, but there are
                                         no records. The Egyptian priests tried to
                                         keep such astronomical knowledge as they
                                         possessed to themselves. It is probable that
                                         they had arbitrary rules for predicting eclipses.
