The past 50 years have seen the rise of synthetic, anionic detergents as a major item of
commerce. The processes used to manufacture these detergents continue to improve as
the consumer market drives producers to offer cleaning products with lower cost and
improved performance. This trend will continue as consumers broaden their definition of
performance to include environmental and purity concerns.
