                                         as two degrees. He re-discovered the in-
                                         equality called ”variation” by observing the
                                         moon in all phases–a thing which had not
                                         been attended to. [It is remarkable that in
                                         the nineteenth century Sir George Airy es-
                                         tablished an altazimuth at Greenwich Ob-
