IR-10.2.3.4 Bridging ligands
A b ridging l igand is indicated by the Greek letter m (mu) prefixing the ligand name (see
Sections IR-9.2.5.2 and IR-10.2.3.1). Bridging ligands are listed i n a lphabetical order along
with the other l igands, b ut in names a b ridging l igand is cited before a c orresponding
non-bridging ligand, and multiple b ridging i s l isted in decreasing order of complexity,
e.g. m 3 bridging b efore m 2 bridging.

The metal centres in heterodinuclear coordination entities are numbered a nd listed a ccording
to the element sequence given i n T able VI*, the central atom arrived at last when t raversing
this table being numbered ‘ 1’ and listed in the name first (see Section IR-9.2.5).
The numerical locants of the central atoms are used in conjunction with the k notation to
indicate the distribution of the ligating atoms. Such locants are placed before t he k symbol
which, as before, may be followed by a r ight superscript numeral to denote t he number
of equivalent bonds to the central atom specified by the locant (see Section IR-9.2.5.5).

Thus, decacarbonyl-1k C,2k C indicates that the carbon atoms of five carbonyl ligands are
bonded to central atom number 1 a nd another five t o c entral atom number 2. In the names of
bridging l igands, t he k terms indicating the bonding to each of the central atoms are

separated by a c olon, e.g. m-propane-1,2-diyl-1kC :2kC .
* T ables numbered with a R oman numeral are collected together at the end of this book.
