BANSDOC
houses the National Science Library
(BANSDOC Library) that acts as a
major information resource centre
in the country in the field of Science
and ICT. It has the finest collections
in Information Science and Information
and Communication Technology and
a strong reference collection in
general S&T aspects. It holds
over about 17000 books, about 300
periodical titles and receives over
about 90 periodicals both Local
and Foreign in the field of S and
ICT. A significant number of these
foreign periodicals are received
in electronic form in CD-ROMs. BANSDOC
has set up an Electronic/Digital
Library Division with facilities
to access information from CD-ROMs.
BANSDOC
provides needful professional inservice/apprenticeship
training on various topics including
the application of information and
communication technology in the
field of library, information and
documentation. To support its ICT
services, BANSDOC has set
up an ICT based Cyber Service Centre
which is well equipped with the
computer and online broadband connected
networking facilities to ensure
all out high quality cyber services
to the users.
BANSDOC
works closely with similar counterpart
institutions in the countries over
the world to bring about global
information exchange. BANSDOC
is associated with the activities
of International Federation for
Information and Documentation
(FID),
International Federation of Library
Associations (IFLA),
Commonwealth Library Associations
(COMLA),
SAARC
Documentation Centre (SDC),
European Patent Organization
(EPO),
European Commission (EC),
UNESCO,
ISESCO etc.
Wide
dissemination of S&T information
to mitigate the information needs
of the S&T community in the
country, BANSDOC has set
up a dial-up online network connection
named as Bangladesh National Scientific
and Library Information Network
(BANSLINK) initiated in 1998
involving 15 nodes in the country.
It is the first online network of
its kind in the country and the
main objective of the BANSLINK
is to pool all the national information
resources on the Internet to ensure
maximum use and application of the
limited resources in right time
to the right user. Moreover the
second phase envisages the BANSLINK
to be on the Internet so that all
BANSLINK nodes may be enabled
to get direct access the global
information resources.
A
team of about 53 personnel comprising
scientific, technical and administrative
staff is handling the programmes
and activities of BANSDOC.
Over 12 personnel of the total staff
are graduates or post-graduates
in science, information science
and ICT. Many of them have specialization
in Library, Documentation Information
Science and ICT.
